The City of Prince George has entered into a Gift Agreement with the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charity for the construction of the Jumpstart Multisport Court.

Through the agreement, Jumpstart Charities will contribute $948,622.50 for the construction of the project.

“This is a significant gift to the city, the amount that’s been listed here, over $900,000, is one you don’t see very often around this table,” said Councillor Garth Frizzell.

The project, located along Massey Drive, will repurposed from old tennis courts, and will have courts for pickleball, tennis and basketball.

The city will have to contribute $475,000 to cover costs associated with site requirements.

“It’s pretty much an upgrade to , let’s compare a Volkswagen to a Cadillac,” said Director of Civic Operations Blake McIntosh.

“This is going to be a premiere destination facility for the City of Prince George.”

Councillor Ron Polillo added he’s been using the current facilities for years, and noted they’ve been nearing the end of their life.

“I think in particular, the popularity of pickleball, and I know the demand on those courts, there’s going to be a lot of people in the pickleball community that are going to be very happy about this,” Polillo said.

McIntosh added if all goes well, a grand opening of the facility could occur after Labour Day.
