PG’s total significant capital projects came in $27.8 million under budget this year

Prince George City Council was given an update on the city’s capital projects at last night’s (Monday) meeting.

“This is a report that we started doing twice a year in 2020 to improve our capital oversight and our transparency,” explained Director of Finance Kris Dalio.

The report includes the status of major, debt, and endowment-funded initiatives and covers active works for over $98 million in capital projects.

It covers project budget health, schedule health, and others.

In total, the city spent $102.5 million on significant capital projects in 2022, with a total original budget of $130.4 million.

The total amended budget for all projects was $163.6 million.

“The projects that were implemented internally after the work last year seem to be paying off very handsomely,” Councillor Garth Frizzell.

“We’re seeing much more efficient projects, we’re seeing projects on time, under budget, on budget.”

City Manager Walter Babicz added that much of the credit should go to city staff.

Notable projects completed in 2022:

  • The main fire hall replacement (Fire Hall #1).
  • The YMCA Park House Care and Early Learning Centre.
  • 2022 road rehabilitation.
  • The Western Acres water system.
  • 2022 sidewalk and walkway rehabilitation.
  • The Shane Lake dam renewal.
