A local non-profit organization is closing up shop after 40 years of existence.
As Prince George’s Mardi Gras of Winter will be no more at the end of the Summer.
Aileen Snow is the current treasurer and the past president of the society, and says a lack of interest has played the biggest role:
“Basically its like everything else in town, its lack of committed board members. The city just doesn’t have the same zest for volunteerism as we did 20 years ago, and to run something as big as Mardi Gras you have to have at least ten committed people”
She went on to say that people could very well be “festivaled” out:
“I think the days of festivals are numbered too, because when Mardi Gras started 40 years ago there was nothing to do in town. We had a couple of radio stations, a couple TV stations and a hockey team. Now, there’s something that goes on every weekend”
She says while this is all well and good, it means the need to encourage people has dwindled.
During the long winter months, Mardi Gras supported festivities and events, and brought excitement to the community.
Snow says, even though their lease runs out this summer the bylaws and constitutions will remain available to those interested, for the next two years.
