Childcare has been a hot topic around the province in the last few years, space across BC is at a premium.
The College Heights Community Association and the City of Prince George successfully applied for the province’s childcare spaces grant, and a second Kool Cats Kid Care is under construction right next door to Malaspina Elementary School.
“Construction is going well. They are progressing on the inside and doing some of the finishes on the outside,” said Jean Petrovic, the Administrator of Kool Cats Kid Care.
“If everything falls into place properly, we anticipate, possibly, it being completed at the end of December. With opening, we are looking at the early new year.”
Progress has been fairly quick over the summer from first breaking ground in the spring, despite Malaspina Avenue being shut down for twice as long as originally planned.
The road outside the construction site was shut down for almost two months, for plumbing and other underground work to be completed. It has reopened in time for school traffic to make its way through starting Tuesday (September 6th).
The addition of a second building will hugely expand daycare in the College Heights area and allow Kool Cats to increase the age range of childcare they provide.
“We have 24 spaces for infant and toddler, we have 25 spaces for 3-5 year old daycare, and we have one classroom that will be shared between preschool classes and kindergarten and grade one after school care” said Petrovic.
She confirmed the old location will remain open and operational – saying the government grant is for new spaces, not the upgrading or moving of existing ones – “Grade two and up will be at our old facility.”
“We thank School District 57 for their continued support to allow us to continue on with this program” she said in closing.
