Northern Health: One in four people use tobacco

Sunday is World Tobacco Day and Northern Health is raising awareness of how harmful the product can be.

The health authority says tobacco kills six million people a year and in BC it kills six thousand people a year.

Northern Health’s Tobacco Reduction Lead Nancy Viney says second-hand smoke can be just as bad.

“And it affects the health of people around smokers especially children,” says Viney, “in the Northern part of BC, one in four people use tobacco, most smokers want to quit but have difficulty due to the complex addiction to tobacco.”

Viney says those wanting to quit smoking can call 811 or head to quitnow.ca.

She says quitnow.ca provides supports through phone, texting and email.
