Local PG businesses are collecting menstrual hygiene products to end period poverty

A quarter of women in BC are unable to access basic needs like pads, tampons, and menstrual cups.

That’s according to Shauna Allen with Modern Match Lingerie, who said they are teaming up with Simply Beautiful Boutique, as well as the United Way of Northern BC to collect menstrual products to be donated to those in need.

“We always knew we wanted to support our community, and with our Worthy Warriors campaign we started off by collecting bra donations. Now we’ve added this new layer of collecting period products alongside the United Way of Northern BC and their yearly Period Promise campaign. Half of everyone who menstruates in B.C has struggled to purchase menstrual products at some point in their life, and that is a major concern that needs to be addressed. Collecting donations is just a piece of the large puzzle.”

An event is being held on May 28th (Saturday) at Simply Beautiful Boutique on 4th avenue from 10 AM to 5 PM, where they’ll be gathering donations, offering store discounts, collecting names for a giveaway, and handing out gift bags to the first 48 people who donate.

United Way is aiming to collect 100,000 menstrual hygiene products across the north.

“Period poverty is a little talked about issue that causes great difficulty for more menstruaters than we realize. Being faced with decisions like whether or not to go to work or school, participating in social activities, or if you have enough money to buy food or period products is something no one should have to deal with. United Way of Northern BC’s Period Promise campaign aims to raise awareness and connect resources to local needs right across the region,” said Trista Spencer with United Way.

The donations stay local, and will be going to the Phoenix Transition Society, which is a transition home for at risk women.
