Goaltending the difference in the Royals victory over the Cougars

The Victoria Royals got great goaltending, the Prince George Cougars did not.

The Royals moved within a point of the Cougars in the race for a playoff spot following a 6-2 victory.

The Royals scored three goals on seven shots on Cougars starting goalie Ty Young before he was replaced by Tyler Brennan just 13:38 into the game.

Brennan made 14 saves on 17 shots fired his way as Prince George outshot Victoria 42-24, including 14-2 in the third period.

Tyler Palmer made 40 saves before 3,783 fans in Victoria.

Devin Aubin scored his first two goals of the season and finished with three points to lead the way for the Royals.

His linemate Tanner Scott had a goal and two helpers, as the Royals fourth line potted three goals.

Koehn Ziemmer and Connor Bowie each scored power-play goals in the first period for Prince George.

Ziemmer’s goal was his team-leading 28th of the season and 12th in 10 games against the Royals.

The 17-year-old Ziemmer has now scored in five-straight games.

Hudson Thornton and Ethan Samson each had a pair of assists to extend their points streaks to eight games.

The (20-33-2-1) Cougars are tied with the (19-33-4-1) Spokane Chiefs for 7th in the Western Conference, just one point ahead of the (18-34-5-1) Royals.

The same teams play again tonight plus Friday and Saturday of next week on Vancouver Island.

Prince George is 8-2 in 10 games against Victoria this season.

The Cougars are 4-21-1-1 against the top five teams in the Western Conference and 16-12-1-0 against the other four teams in the Conference.
