Community continues to rally behind family who lost everything

Prince George residents are continuing to help out a family that lost everything in a fire.

On February 28th, tragedy struck the Martin Family as their house went up in flames.

The mother, son, and one of three daughters were medevacked to Vancouver.

The three-year-old daughter took her last breath the following Wednesday, and the mother was in a coma.

Derek Andrew is a family friend, and he says the mother and son are doing better now.

“Mom is out a coma, she’s actually out of the hospital, and she’s healing,” Andrew said.

“Dad is still up in the Children’s Hospital, and he’s getting better as well.”

Andrew and other family friends have been working on a number of fundraisers and other events to help the family get back on their feet.

“The GoFundMe is doing really well, that really took off, the community’s been fantastic on that,” Andrew explained.

“We also did a charity event last night (Friday), 100% of the proceeds went to the family as well, with a silent auction there, it went really well.”

In addition, a donation drive was held in the CN Centre Parking lot this afternoon.

Many household items like kitchen items, furniture, and clothing were donated.

Following today’s drive, Andrew says they’re going to continue to raise as much money is needed.

“I think we’re going to try and go as long as we can,” He explained.

“We’re just kind of at the beginning stages of figuring out what we have and what we still need.”
