Over $1.65 million goes to 14 BC caribou habitat restoration projects

The Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation approved 14 grants to restore high value habitat for caribou in BC.

Over $1.65 million in total was provided for these projects.

Some of the projects are close to Prince George, with the Otter project (about 86km northeast of the city), and the Tumuch project (about 95km southeast of the city).

The 2021-22 grant recipients include:

  • Otter- $6,120
  • Tumuch- $8,720
  • Adams Groundhog Road Rehabilitation and Reforestation Project- $199,500
  • Upper Bigmouth Creek- $28,431
  • Mica Creek- $288,681
  • Tweedsmuir Caribou Winter Range – Chelaslie Road Restoration- $70,671
  • Whitesail- $87,174
  • Amoco Road- $23,315
  • Kotcho Lake Restoration Area- $175,780
  • Peck Creek-Upper Carbon- $53,452
  • Callazon-Clearwater Valley: 4000 and 3800 Roads- $122,984
  • Goldway Road- $72,959
  • Mt. Rochfort- $192,617
  • East Babcock Restoration Area- $324,720

The Ministry of Forests said caribou recovery is a complex challenge.

Work like planting trees to restore areas to a pre-disturbed states and blocking former roads to reduce predator access are some of the things being done to encourage caribou population growth in BC.
