Prince George has been seeing a lot of snow recently, and the City’s Manager of Roads and Fleet gave a full scope of the snow removal process.
Jordan Wiseman said about 450-600 loads of snow can be shipped out a night.
“We have anywhere from 12-15 trucks per night when we’re doing loadout of windrows to help facilitate in moving that snow to our snow dumps throughout the city.”
In terms of staff, Wiseman gave a rundown of how many people are working in that department:
- Internal resources for snow and ice control has 58 internal employees in the roads division.
- Around 33 people are working as part of the fleet (which includes welders, mechanics and light and automotive fleet)
Wiseman said they also have contractors working, noting that there are 6 graders that help out with snow events, a list of vendors that help with equipment, and a compliment of other contractors.
“It’s quite a gamut of equipment that is utilized to undertake this entire project.”
On top of the 12-15 trucks removing snow in PG, Wiseman listed other equipment at their disposal:
- 4 sidewalk machines
- 6 city wheel loaders
- 7 graders
- a large snow blower on a wheel loader
- 7 plow trucks
- a number of pickups with plows
The cold weather does take it’s toll on the equipment, and Wiseman said it can cause some complications.
“The cold weather definitely can wreak havoc with after treatment systems in some of our equipment, and then of course breaking steel, and things like that.”
