Over 3,800 flights around the world were cancelled on Sunday, with over half of them in the US, with COVID-19 and the adverse weather in the Western US causing air travelers to be grounded.
Gord Duke, President and CEO of the Prince George Airport Authority said they aren’t seeing nearly the same amount of cancellations, but noted that the current conditions are making things difficult.
“We’re not seeing anything close to that in Prince George. There’s some isolated cancellations, and there may be some that are related to shortages of staff in other places.”
Duke said flight crews that operate planes can see some shortages, which could cause flight cancellations.
He noted that the airport is like any other business, and that COVID-19 causes issues there as well.
But the virus isn’t the only hurdle the airport is having to jump over, as the cold weather and snow is causing problems as well.
“Sometimes just the volume and the cold combined to make it pretty tough. When it gets that cold, things break easier,” said Duke.
He noted that having to keep the active runways and roadways clear of snow can be a real challenge for crews at the airport.
