The Regional District of Fraser Fort George came to a stalemate when deciding on whether to push the West Coast Olefins natural gas extraction plant through to the next step of delegation, and Chief Dolleen Logan said it should have been a hard no.
“It was seven for and seven against, and I had to stop our chief and council meeting to let them know what I read and we were all blown away. We did not know, we thought we were done with West Coast Olefins,” said Logan.
The discussion on the project that was held on Thursday (Nov.18) took up a large part of the meeting, with the board room filled with many residents protesting against the Pineview project, but the whole topic got pushed back to a future meeting.
Many of those who wanted the project pushed forward said they wanted to give the plant due process, with board members like Kyle Sampson saying that he wanted more information.
“I think that it’s really important to when we go through processes like these that we have all the information. At this point, I would say I would like to hear more on this application, rather than deny where we are at,” said Sampson.
Logan said West Coast Olefins had not been communicating with anyone from the Lheidli T’enneh.
“I’ll let you know, the last time Ken James was in this office was a year and a half ago. And the last thing he said was, I don’t need to talk to you people no more, I’ve already consulted.”
In October West Coast Olefins backed out of a $5.6 billion petrochemical plant that was aimed for the BCR Industrial site, but the $1.5 billion natural gas extraction plant slated for farmland in Pineview is still being pursued.
