The Nechako White Sturgeon Conservation hatchery has had a full year of operations now, and it would appear to be achieving everything it set out to do.
Manager Cory Williamson says the Hatchery has spawned about 1,250 fish so far this year, and says with some extra room they’ve been able to grow them nearly 5 times larger than the Hatchery’s original target.
He says there have been some bumps along the way, but had some exciting news:
“We had some hiccups at the beginning, dealing with the new system and getting it up and running, but since we have dealt with that the fish have been growing really well and they are very healthy and we are about to release just a little over 600 fish on Monday, back to the river”
Williamson says the size of these fish will now offset any survival issues with smaller Sturgeon, meaning they will be able to handle the river conditions far better.
