UPDATE: Windstorm causing power havoc on North Coast and into interior

An odd weather system has been moving through the region.

Theres a risk of thunderstorms for most of the day today and and a large windstorm that blew in off the north coast which saw winds between 60 to 80km/h.

Environment Canada’s Matt Macdonald says it was a good indicator of whats to come this summer:

“Well we saw a really big cold front move through the Prince George area late this morning. A really active cold front. One of the strongest ones we’ve seen here this spring. [It’s] a good heads up as we head into Summer as to what those thunderstorms can look like”

As for power outages there are currently just over a 1000 without power in Prince George and its surrounding areas, Vanderhoof is seeing around 660, Fort St. James sits with 2400 and Fraser Lake and its area are just over 200 with most power expected to be restored by 4 o’clock.

BC Hydro is asking customers without power to be patient and to call 1-888-POWERON to report any trees on lines, power issues or downed power lines.
