This week is National Immunization awareness week.
Provincial Health Officer Perry Kendall says parents considering whether or not to vaccinate their children should get their information from a reliable source, and says a large number of vaccinations are available:
“We have at least 15-16 diseases that can be preventable. Not necessarily by vaccination from birth because we start vaccinations at 2 months and we carry on vaccinating through till grade 9 but during infancy childhood and into youth we have a large number of diseases that are vaccine preventable”
Kendall says childhood vaccinations are safe, effective, and free, and the best shot against a number of different illnesses.
He also reminds parents that the long term benefits these vaccinations present far outweighs any risks they may present.
