White Rock Lake wildfire last fire of note in the province

The Prince George Fire Centre (PGFC) has seen one fire in the last seven days, and the only fire of note left in the province is the White Rock Lake blaze in the Kamloops Fire Centre.

The BC Wildfire Service is still battling fires in all areas, as there are 205 active fires across BC, 49 of which are in the PGFC.

“We are actually moving into a pretty fall-like pattern and are expecting a fall storm with heavy showers into later this week. But aside from the precipitation that’s typical for this time of year, there are shorter burning periods,” said PGFC spokesperson Sharon Nickel.

Nickel adds the shorter days and longer nights mean the potential for rapid drying gets diminished.

She said that we should expect to see smoke, especially in areas that have larger fires, for a few weeks still.

“There’s still the potential for some light ground level smoldering and stuff, particularly on the bigger fires, like where we might see the ground fires in stumps and root systems.”

Meanwhile, the province-wide state of emergency, declared in July to help in the fight against wildfires, will be allowed to expire at midnight Tuesday.

Officials with B-C Wildfire Services say the fire situation remains serious.

But cooler temperatures and rain have helped crews make significant progress over the last couple of weeks.
