Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dolleen Logan put in a request to Prince George City Council to rename O’Grady Road.
“The priest O’Grady was in charge of three residential schools, so he knew what was going on, he had to of known what was going on. And then they gave him an honorary doctorate,” said Chief Logan.
“I figured for all First Nations is to have that name removed and returned to the original name Marleau Road,” she added.
City Council was on board with the request, and Council staff will return with a consideration for Council in August.
“I think this is an important step,” said Councillor Susan Scott.
“I was in a conversation earlier today (Monday), and I said this cannot be a token appeasement, this has to have meaning,” she added.
The University of British Columbia is currently reviewing O’Grady’s honorary degree after news of the remains of 215 children were found at the former Kamloops Residential School.
“Just imagine if you were abused, you got to see your abuser at least once a week,” said Chief Logan.
“That’s what that name is going to be like every time you go up there, it’s on O’Grady Road, and there’s going to be a little twinge inside of you not wanting to go that way.”
