BC became the first province to finalize its steps towards a Canada-wide, community-based system of child care.
This system has the federal government working with the provincial government to improve early learning and child care.
The YMCA is the largest non-profit child care provider in the province, and Amanda Alexander, CEO of the YMCA of Northern BC said she’s quite happy with the agreement, and that things were much tougher five years ago.
“We had parents sleep overnight outside of our health and fitness facility to be able to ensure that they were able to get care for their children,”
Alexander said they’ve more than doubled the spaces they provide for child care since then, but the waitlists are still long for parents.
Under the new agreement, the Government of Canada is investing $3.2 billion over the next five years, and 40,000 new childcare and early learning spaces will be created in a seven-year span.
