Environment Canada says temperatures in Prince George are cooling off by a few degrees after reaching temperatures in the mid to late 30s earlier this week.
The city’s high is 26 degrees today (Friday) and could cool off even further to 13 degrees tonight.
However, Jonathon Bau, Meteorologist with Environment Canada says Prince George’s heat warning is still in effect.
“The reason why the heat warning is still in effect is basically for the overnight lows, we’re still seeing those elevated numbers so that’s why we’re keeping it going because there isn’t the overnight low that allows for cooling from the daytime heat,” he explained.
Last Sunday, Prince George saw the hottest June 27th since 1928 as it reached 36.4 degrees in the Northern Capital.
Bau doesn’t expect PG will see these record-breaking temperatures again anytime soon, adding that there is some rain in the forecast for Sunday night.
However, it is expected to be a sunny weekend for PG during the daytime as both Saturday and Sunday are expected to remain at 26 degrees during the daytime, falling to the low teens in the evening.
“There might be a slight chance, kind of a 30% chance of showers and a very slight risk for a thunderstorm on Sunday evening, and then a greater risk of showers and risk of thunderstorms on Monday,” he added.
Even with the expected precipitation, campfires are still banned in the city and across the province as there is a high to extreme risk of wildfire in Prince George.
Meanwhile, in Vanderhoof, residents could expect some smokey skies as crews battle wildfires in the area.
“There is kind of a forest fire nearby so depending on the wind direction over the next several days occasionally you might see hazy skies just due to the forest fire,” Bau explained.
