Ontario catastrophe renewing rail safety concerns

A rail catastrophe in Ontario recently has the transportation safety board once again looking for answers, and leaves us wondering if a similar incident could occur in Prince George.

After the horrendous derailment in Quebec in 2013, the TSB is now wondering if enough was done to safeguard the risks of hauling flammable liquids via rail, after another incident in Gogama, Ontario earlier this month.

Prince George-Peace River MP Bob Zimmer says while he believes its still safe, there is always more to be done:

“I still think its relatively safe, but again, we need to make sure the standards are ever growing stronger and that we are ever vigilant about them”

MP for the Skeena-Bulkley Nathan Cullen disagreed however, and didn’t mince words when it came to what he believes is a clear lack of safety:

“[The] Conservatives spend more every year on those ads on television than they do on rail inspectors, shows where their priorities are and we think they’re the wrong priorities so lets get this right”

While no one was injured, the March 7th derailment in Ontario caused a massive environmental risk, after multiple crude oil tankers burst into flames and spilled into the local river system. It also destroyed most of the track and knocked out a bridge prohibiting the flow of goods in the area.
