Rolladome future unknown; user groups speak up

The future of the Prince George Rollerdome is still undetermined, and a number of user groups have spoken up.

Jamie Mault, President of Rated PG Rollerderby spoke to Vista Radio on the importance the dome has on Prince George’s roller derby community.

“Roller Derby has had a huge impact on my life,” explains Mault, “I honestly don’t know what kind of person I would be today if I didn’t have Roller Derby in my life.”

Mault (known as Nandicorn at the rink) has been with the club for 12 years.

“Having that group and that amazing community shaped me so much,” she added,  “I am much more confident and empowered by the sport.”

Mault proudly describes her sport as extremely inclusive, pointing out that there is no real archetype of players, as it can be played by anyone of nearly any age group or gender.

“We all come from different walks of life, different jobs, different body types and abilities, really anyone can play roller derby.”

According to Mault, the dome’s future also determines the future for Rated PG Rollerderby, as it is the only venue in Prince George made for what they do.

However, that isn’t the case for Prince George’s Ball Hockey League, according to the league’s administrator, Jefferey Dyrblom.

“At the moment we wouldn’t have anywhere to practice or play if the dome closed down, but we could use one of the school gym’s we have used in the past.”

According to Dyrblom, the league would become a spring and summer league, like the majority of the ball hockey clubs in Canada.

The league has been around for 20+ years, Dryblom has been actively involved in the club for 12.

He reflected on the benefits the league has on its members, “each team has their own community which really builds skills as many players haven’t played in an organized sport before.”

“It’s a little bit less daunting than ice hockey and has a little bit less equipment which makes it easier for players to really engage in the sport.”

Dryblom explained that as of right now, the transfer of ownership of the business is undetermined.
