Avalanche Canada is warning you to be wary in the back country, this weekend.
Senior Forecaster James Floyer says conditions are dicey, especially after last weekend saw people caught in three serious avalanches, one fatal for a snowmobiler near Tumbler Ridge, last Sunday.
“What we’re really trying to say for this weekend is – nothing has changed,” Floyer says. “We don’t believe there’s anything really significant that’s changed in the snowpack that would mean that something similar couldn’t happen again if the right person went into the right area.”
Floyer says they are most concerned with high alpine areas in the North Rockies.
He says you need the right equipment before you head out.
The essentials being transceivers, once you’ve once you’ve got a signal, you need a probe to make a precise connection between yourself and the victim.
After that, it’s all about shovelling.
“You can appreciate digging a two-meter hole in the snow can be quite challenging,” he says. “If you take a few steps downhill and tunnel horizontally, you dig much quicker than if you tunnel in a vertical line.”
