The Northern Bear Awareness Society is warning members of the public to exercise caution around bears following a bizarre incident in the Hart.
An individual allegedly chased a bear with bear spray through a residential area while inside of a vehicle. The incident occurred on Saturday evening in the Wildwood/Sussex Lane area.
Eventually, the bear was forced into a backyard where a reported aggressive encounter occurred.
Moving a bear from one area to another is called “shepherding”, and should only be done by trained individuals.
It is also not recommended to use bear spray in a residential area unless to protect an individual. Although the effective range of spray is around 20-25 feet, the dispersal cloud can drift and affect others.
If the animal is unable to find a clear route of escape back into green space, this type of situation can quickly turn dangerous.
This follows another incident that left a dog dead on Friday at Forests For The World.
