BC Transit sees 60 to 70 percent decrease in ridership in Prince George

As Phase two of the province’s restart plan got underway today (Tuesday), BC transit is nearly two weeks away from bringing back bus fares.

Bus routes across the province, including Prince George, have seen a substantial decrease in ridership.

However, they are expecting those numbers to return to normal, as students slowly return to school and the economy begins to reopen.

“With the changes in delivery models for post-secondary schools, as well as primary and secondary schools (…) we have seen a decrease in ridership between 60 to 80 percent across the province and in Prince George it’s been a decrease of mid 60 to 70 percent,” said spokesperson Jonathon Dyck.

Last week, ridership was down 66 percent compared to the same time last year.

“This is not surprising, given what’s happened with different systems and the fact that we are also limiting passenger capacity.”

Vinyl panels will be installed at the front of buses to separate drivers and passengers, according to BC Transit.

The panels will be installed on all vehicles without a full driver door.

“As we were able to get those installed it allowed us to move forward as fares are reintroduced and front door loading returns (June 1,)” added Dyck.

However, customers will still be able to talk to their drivers and purchase day passes.
