A local UNBC Masters candidate is researching the role parents play on youth sports.
Alice Muirhead is looking to measure parental behaviours in terms of praise, understanding and direction and the impact they have on their childs experiences while playing the sport:
“..are parents interested in the outcome, are they interest in gold medals and scholarships and NHL contracts. I think there’s a mix of both, and maybe a bit of parents living vicariously through their kids, maybe they didn’t quite achieve their sports dream”
She is focusing specifically on Ski racing and Hockey, and says parents who are highly supportive obviously have a much more positive impact on their child, and finds that children will see much more interest in the sport than those whose parents care only about finishes, medals and results.
She encourages anyone interested to take her survey at www.livewellnorth.com to help increase her statistics and help her see more thorough results and findings.
