Province addresses concerns about lack of COVID-19 funding for friendship centres

BC’s Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation says he is aware that more help is needed for friendship centres.

In an email correspondence with Vista Radio, Minister Scott Fraser explained his ministry is actively looking for ways to further help friendship centres and the people they serve.

This includes conversations with the Federal Government.

Fraser says they have advanced annual funding for friendship centres as a stop-gap measure, to help address cash flow pressures in the short-term.

However, Executive Director of the Quesnel Tillicum Society’s Native Friendship Centre, Ton Goulet, says that have been left out so far, when it comes to COVID-19 funding.

Goulet says at the moment the centre is functioning with about half of the funding they normally receive, which amounts to less than roughly half a million dollars.

This may result in an interruption in services and programs in the future.

Details on Prince George’s Friendship Centre’s COVID-19 response can be found on its website.
