A 33-year-old Prince George man and a 30-year-old Abbotsford woman are in police custody after colliding with a semi-truck near Chase, B.C., following a series of alleged dangerous driving infractions.
The two were arrested with the help of a police service dog.
The woman is expected to be released from custody with a future court date, while the man is expected to appear in court tomorrow (Tuesday).
No charges have been laid, according to police.
Just after 3 a.m. on Sunday, an RCMP officer attempted to stop a suspected impaired driver on the Trans Canada Highway (TCH ) near Chase.
When the driver didn’t stop, the officer pulled over and requested help finding the vehicle.
A second officer located the vehicle near Shuswap Avenue and the TCH where he observed the driver allegedly swerving all over the roadway, over the shoulder and into the oncoming lane, at speeds of close to 140 kilometers per hour.
Recognizing the possible risk to motorists, the officer activated emergency equipment to try and stop the vehicle and alert oncoming traffic.
The vehicle disappeared around a 90-degree bend in the roadway, and RCMP officers discovered the vehicle had collided head-on with an oncoming semi-truck.
Upon police arrival, the driver and passenger of the suspect vehicle were already out and attempting to escape on foot.
The semi-truck driver was uninjured.
“We are thankful that the semi-truck driver, our officers or any other members of the public were not injured as a result of this driver’s blatant disregard to anyone’s safety,” stated Sgt. Janelle Shoihet.
