Jobs Minister implements Worksafe BC recommendations

Jobs Minister Shirley Bond announced some changes to the BC Workers compensation act earlier on Wednesday.

The amendments were in response to Worksafe BC advisor Gord Macatee’s July 2014 recommendations in the Worksafe review and action plan report.

Among the biggest changes, Bond says the legislation will expand WorkSafes ability to prevent unsafe working conditions, and will also expand the court authority for prosecution of the most negligent offenders, which would include disallowing certain employers to continue operations of a certain industry.

Bond stated more hefty penalties are also possible, and says the amendments include a new time frame in which employers can conduct investigations, so that corrective action is swiftly introduced and preventative measures are more quickly put into action.
