One local hockey player is trying to make a difference in the lives of youth, and make them see hope where there could possibly be none.
PG Native Myles Mattila is a 9th round draft pick of the Vancouver Giants, but off the ice – he is also an avid promoter of mental health awareness.
He is in Vancouver as a speaker this weekend attending a Balancing our minds youth summit, and spoke about how he chose to get involved with mental wellness after reading about Rick Rypien of the Vancouver Canucks, and relating that to a story in his own life where a friend was struggling with a mental health issue:
“That’s what I kind of wanted to do, with the person that I saw was struggling and I didn’t know how to help him out at the time, then I learned about mindcheck and I though it was great, it’s a great resource if you go on the website take a few quizzes and learn about yourself”
Myles also recently received the Hammers Heroes award from Dan Hamhuis, which is awarded to a young hero in the community that steps up and supports local community efforts.
As mentioned, Myles will be a guest speaker at the Balancing our Minds Youth Summit on Thursday and he encourages everyone to check out mindcheck.ca for more information and support options.
