“Don’t get set for spring just yet”: PG winter temps set to stick around

Don’t let the sunny weather fool you, you can expect a freezing February according to The Weather Network.

Conditions in B.C. have started warming up as of the end of January, but things are expected to cool down once again.

“We certainly did get our fair share of cold air and cold temperatures for the middle part of January, however, temperatures started to trend a little bit warmer towards the end of the month,” said Kelly Sonnenburg, Weather Network Meteorologist.

The Weather Network is anticipating temperatures to fall by at least 5 to 10 degrees this month, as well as some snow this week for Prince George and Northern BC.

“As we head into the middle and end  of February, we do expect the coldest air to be focused across Western Canada, so British Columbia does look to be the target.”

Sonnenburg explained the usual patch of warm air over the north pacific ocean, nicknamed “the blob”, is not the main driver for weather trends in the province this year.

“What we have seen is a little bit more of that active storm track, that’s allowed sea surface temperatures over the pacific to churn up and allow those sea surface temperatures to become cooler,”

Sonnenburg noted the cold will likely set in this week, and could stay through March.

“Don’t get set for spring just yet!”
