ICBC warns of harsh conditions over Family Day weekend

It might be a long-weekend, but ICBC is reminding you to be safe on the highways.

ICBC’s Road Safety Co-ordinator Diana Pozer says 270 people are injured and two are killed in 1300 crashes on average in BC over this weekend.

“A lot of people are planning to visit relatives or take a bit of a break over the holidays for the long weekend, but if you can change your plans or maybe go at a different time, it might be advisable, because it’s going to be challenging travelling on the roads over the weekend,” Pozer says.

While it’s snowing in Northern BC, the south is being pounded with rain, and freezing conditions on the highways.

Pozer advises you to give yourself plenty of time before you leave and to also give yourself plenty of distance between yourself and other vehicles.

“You really have to adjust your driving habits for the road conditions,” she says. “The posted speed limits are for ideal conditions , not when we have adverse conditions like we are going to be having this weekend.”

If you are unfortunate enough to get into a crash, she has the following advice: “If you’re in a fender-bender, if you can get your vehicle off the road, get the information from the other person, if you can. Also if it’s possible, and you have cell-service, call into dial-a-claim, if there’s injuries, call 911, and try to stay calm and stay at the scene,” Pozer says.

ICBC Dial-A-Claim: 1-800-910-4222.
