School District 57 set to receive a modest funding increase

The BC Ministry of Education has announced a substantial increase in education funding to reflect growing student enrolment numbers.

Public school operating grants are up $161 million dollars for the 2019-2020 school year.

The Ministry said that 40 of BC’s 60 school districts have seen enrolment increases this past year, with overall student enrolment increasing for the fifth consecutive year.

School District 57 (SD57) was among them, as the district saw a growth of 71 students this past year.

Board Chair Tim Bennett called it “a very marginal increase”.

“We will see a little bit more money come our way, and that is because of the enrolment growth we’ve seen as a district,” Bennett explained, “we are still trending up in terms of enrolment, but it is definitely starting to level out.”
