Team BC ready for the Winter Games

The Canada Winter Games are just around the corner and final preparations for Team BC are underway.

This morning female hockey player Micah Hart was named as team BC flag bearer. The 18 year old was the captain of Canada’s 2015 U18 team who won silver at the IIHF World Championships.

“The biggest thing I’m going to take out of my experience at the World Championships will be just enjoying the moments” Micah says “Not looking ahead, not looking back, just enjoying the moment while you are in it at all times”

Out of the 249 athletes on Team BC, 30 from Northern BC and 19 from Prince George will enjoy home field advantage.

Team BC Chef de Mission (ambassador) Rob Needham says they plan on taking advantage of competing in BC and have high hopes.

“We are not establishing a specific medal target.” Needham says “But it terms of overall performance it will be a top three in the overall standings. Historically Ontario Quebec and BC are traditionally in the mix.”

2014 Olympic silver medallist and Canada Games alumni Kelsey Serwa has been named the honorary captain for Team BC. Her advice to athletes was for them to just enjoy themselves and the whole experience.

“There is skill in managing your distractions staying focused and having that balance without being focused on your event 100 percent 24 hours a day because that will burn you out.”

Prince George’s very own Avril Harris, a wheelchair basketball athlete, will be reading the athletes oath during the opening ceremonies on February 13th.
