The overall health of men in Northern BC is on the minds of the Canadian Cancer Society.
As their Power Play project kicked off its next six-week healthy living challenge on Monday with the aim of improving the overall health of men in their workplace.
Promotional coordinator Karensa Medhurst says the program has also seen some “healthy” competition:
“There is healthy competition between the different workplaces, and there’s also competition between the different guys at work. They’re talking about what they’re eating and bringing in their lunchboxes, and they are also talking about how they are getting more exercise throughout the day”
The first of the two six week challenges focused on getting men moving, and counting their steps. Several Northern companies originally joined up, including President Rick Reinbolt and Lomak Bulk Carriers ltd. who explained the reason for their involvement:
“Part of the reason why we partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society was to keep it going, initiatives sometimes lose their flavour after a month or two and we really want to make this a culture here at Lomak, and we are certainly seeing some success in that regard. For example, we’ve had a number of people quit smoking, a number people have stepped up or started their exercise where they hadn’t before”
