Dog, nine puppies ‘left to die’ in landfill now home for the holidays

It’s a tragic story that has a happy ending.

On June 10th, a dog and her nine puppies were found abandoned in a sealed box at the Puntzi Lake Landfill west of Williams Lake, where someone had heard whimpering and went to investigate. Upon further inspection, they found the box and canine family trapped inside it without food or water.

The Good Samaritan brought the dog and her litter to the nearest SPCA shelter, where they were treated for dehydration and malnutrition. They were cared for until the puppies were old enough to be adopted.

“Casey, a sweet border collie-husky mix, lay wedged around her nine wee newborn puppies, doing her best to protect them from the extreme temperature. She was unable to even lift her head inside the small cardboard box where she was trapped.  All she could do was whimper in fear, not knowing why she and her babies were trapped with no food or water,” the BC SPCA wrote in an update on their website.

“Today, the puppies are all home enjoying the holidays with loving families. And, Casey is reunited with her rightful guardian. Shockingly, Casey had been stolen many months earlier, and a caring friend sent the news story to her true guardian, who was thrilled to be reunited with her.”

According to the SPCA, Casey is at home with her owner and enjoying the holidays.
