Independent Investigations Office looks into incident at Prince George RCMP Detachment

The RCMP have notified the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. regarding an incident that took place in Prince George which resulted in injury.

In the evening of May 11, 2019, in the area of 5th Avenue and Ewart Street, an officer from the Prince George RCMP was on patrol when they observed a man riding a bicycle, allegedly weaving in and out of traffic and not wearing a helmet.

The officer stopped the man to identify him and serve him a violation ticket. It was during that interaction that the officer attempted to place him under arrest for other unrelated offences near a residence in the 500-block of Alward Street, where the man allegedly resisted the officer’s attempt to place him in handcuffs.

As a result of the man’s resistance, he was taken into custody with assistance from back-up officers and transported to the Prince George RCMP Detachment. Shortly after arrival, the man was lodged into a cell.

The following morning the man complained of pain, and BC Emergency Health Services was called to the detachment to transport him to a local area hospital for treatment.  The IIO BC is now investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the man’s injuries.

As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
