It’s time to bend it like Beckham because most sports fields in Prince George are opening up this week.
Starting on Friday, May 3 the City of Prince George said almost all city sports fields, and ball diamonds will be safe to play on.
“Rest and recovery is vital importance to establish healthy turf,” says City Parks Supervisor, Chris Bjorn.
The Joe Martin Field and fields #3 and #4 at Volunteer Park will remain closed for about another week because they require more time to dry.
Also, the lawn bowling facilities at Watrous Park will open in early June as usual.
Bjorn said it is crucial to allow turf to establish proper root systems to ensure fields are healthy and safe through the playing season.
“Playing on a ball diamond or sports field too early or too late in the year can cause irreparable damage to root systems and weaken turf for the season. Playing on unsafe terrain can also lead to injury.”
