Soltes latest addition to recruitment class for Timberwolves

UNBC’s Women’s basketball team continues to bolster their backcourt.

The Timberwolves officially announced the commitment of five-foot-seven guard Anastasia Soltes for the 2019-2020 Canada West season.

“I am so excited to have made it official and be playing basketball with the Timberwolves at the U SPORTS level,” said Soltes. “The Timberwolves had such a fantastic season, and I really enjoyed following along. I am so excited to be joining such a great program.”

The native of Calgary, who will graduate from Henry Wise Wood High School in June, plans to enroll in Environmental Studies at UNBC. She has a passion for educating others on sustainability and resource management.

Soltes was able to visit the Prince George campus this past winter where she was able to practice with the Timberwolves while also touring the Northern Sports Centre, as well as the rest of the facilities.

“I chose UNBC because it not only had a good basketball team, but it had good academics and a program I am really interested in. When I met the team, they were so nice, and I really liked the coaches. I felt like it was a perfect fit with the environment, the sports, and the school.”

Soltes was the MVP of her team at Henry Wise Wood, scoring 39 points in a game earlier this season. She led the Warriors to the city championship and is looking forward to making the jump to the highest level of Canadian university sport.

Timberwolves coach Sergey Shchepotkin says his newest addition has the attitude and physicality to successfully transition to the caliber of play that’s found in Canada West basketball. He says the fact that Soltes won her team’s “most coachable” award is proof that she will be a contributor over her five years in green and gold.

“I am really excited to add Anastasia to our team. She has an incredible work ethic and plays with passion and quickness at both ends of the floor. Her intensity and willingness to work will make our defense better. This is an important piece for us.”

Soltes, who is a product of Genesis Basketball in Calgary, will join her new teammates for training camp in August.
