The unemployment rate in the area continues to hold steady.
Numbers released from Statistics Canada report that North-Central BC has an overall unemployment rate of 4.6% for December 2014, an increase of only 0.1% from this time, last year.
Analyst Vincent Ferrao says that represents around 4,000 people looking for work.
“The other statistic that we have is the number of people who are working, we have 83,500 people working [last] December,” he says. “It’s not much of a change from a year ago, we had 84,000 people working in December, 2013.”
Ferrao says the job rate was slightly boosted thanks to more people working in the Information, Culture, and Recreation sector, as well as business building, and natural resources.
“But we saw declines, mainly in retail and wholesale trades, also in accommodation and food services,” he says.
In BC, the unemployment rate fell to 5.4%, the lowest it has been since 2008, while Canada’s rate overall is unchanged at 6.6%.
