Following an overwhelming vote, teaching assistants at UNBC have joined CUPE 2278.
The 76 TAs from the University will now be members of the union local that also represents teaching assistants and English-language instructors at the University of British Columbia.
“We are so pleased to welcome these TAs into our local,” said CUPE 2278 First Vice President Gillian Glass. “After years of neglected concerns, they will be represented by a union that understands their work and their issues.”
The first steps by the union will now be negotiating a first collective agreement on behalf of their newest members at UNBC.
While many of the TAs at the university are also students, wages will be an important discussion that will be included in the bargaining agreement, along with the fairness of hiring and due process, protection from academic harm, all while working towards a fair collective agreement.
