Curling Championship looking to sweep in volunteers

The Women’s World Curling Championships are just a hit, skip, and a brush away from landing in Prince George.

Volunteer applications are now being accepted for the 2020 World Women’s Championship, which is scheduled for March 14 to 22 at the CN Centre.

“I think based on the uptake that we’ve already had on people inquiring to be volunteers we expect that we’re probably going to have more than enough volunteers,” said Glen Mikkelsen, Vice Chair of Facilities for the Championship. “So we certainly encourage people who really want to be a part of the event to sign up as soon as possible so their names are down early.”

Mikkelsen adds the Northern Capital has earned a reputation for having a strong volunteering community.

“Based on our experience in working with volunteers in this community, people love to be involved, and with this being one of those unique world championships to come to Prince George, we certainly expect there would be great interest in people wanting to be involved,” said Mikkelsen.

A variety of volunteer roles are available for set-up and takedown, working in the stands during the games and behind the scenes at various checkpoints. Volunteers are also needed for a variety of media roles and assisting in keeping lounges stocked with refreshments and food.

Mikkelsen added that while the number of volunteers has yet to be set by Curling Canada, the numbers in the early discussions were upwards to 500 volunteers would be needed.

Those interested in volunteering can apply through the Curling Canada website.
