The Province has provided $4-million to purchase, as well as renovate the former Economy Inn Motel for a new housing project.
Once renovated, the building will provide a home to 28 people who are facing mental health and addiction challenges, as well as facing rental rates that they are able to afford.
“Having a supportive environment with safe, secure housing can help people stabilize and begin rebuilding their lives,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “These new homes are going to provide crucial support to people living in poverty, experiencing homelessness, and those dealing with mental health and addictions challenges.”
The facility will be staffed 24 hours, seven days a week, and will be operated by the Association Advocating for Women and Community.
The renovated building will feature 28 units, all of which will have private washrooms and small kitchenettes. Communal dining and laundry facilities will also be included once renovations are completed and the building starts allowing tenants to move in.
Residents will pay a monthly rent of $450, which is the $375 social assistance shelter allowance provided by the Province to people experiencing homelessness, plus $75 for cable, internet, and laundry. One meal a day will also be covered.
According to the 2018 Homeless Count, 129 people in Prince George are said to be homeless.
The Province has committed to creating an additional 105 affordable housing units in Prince George.
