Prince George Fire Centre prepares for another season

We’re barely out of the woods in terms of winter, but the Prince George Fire Centre wants us to start looking forward into fire season.

Amanda Reynolds, spokesperson for the Centre said crews are preparing at bootcamps all throughout the month of April and then will be distributed across the province.

The PG Fire Centre will have three more crews this year, one to stay in the city and two will be located in Mackenzie.

“We do have these spring-like conditions, these nice warm temperatures and the snow is starting to melt. Once that happens is when people start to do registered burns or backyard burning.”

“We’re just reminding the public to be extra cautious and if they’re going to be doing any of those larger burns, like a Category Three, you need to call in and get a registration number, which is free, but you do need to call,” said Reynolds.

Anyone doing Category Two burning needs to be mindful that there is a fuel-free area around, and that embers aren’t catching.

“We do have a grass fire season across the entire fire centre, it’s starting to come up quick. We do have crews available, but this is what the public needs to be doing in order to do any safe burning moving forward.”
