Are you aware of your ecological footprint? Did you know that if everyone on earth lived like the average Canadian, it would require at least three to four earths to provide all the material and energy we consume? Canadians need to think seriously about how to reduce the amount of waste we produce. Individual life-style choices have a strong influence on our ecological footprint. The Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society (a.k.a REAPS) has been encouraging individuals to make greener choices since 1989. Embrace the 5 R’s: Refuse, Repair, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, and learn how to make a difference in your community through outreach and education from REAPS.
Education is the first step to leading a greener lifestyle. Simple everyday choices have a big impact on our environment. REAPS invites you to free workshops to get started.
Composting 101: Composting diverts a huge amount of garbage away from the landfill and creates a valuable soil supplement to enrich and improve soil quality and fertility. Learn how to compost successfully to enhance your gardens, lawns and flower baskets.
Recycling 101: Recycling is very important to reduce the negative impact on the natural environment. Harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses are released from rubbish in landfill sites. In this hands on workshop the mystery of how to sort your recyclables at the curb and where to take over 70 other household items to be recycled in our community is revealed.
WaterWise: Since 71% of the earth is covered in water, you can’t help but wonder: Why should we conserve? Only 3% of water on Earth is fresh water, and only 0.5% is available for drinking. You can conserve our precious water resource while cultivating a healthy, attractive garden. In this workshop we feature waterwise gardening: drought tolerant plant selection, watering tips, zone planting, simplifying your backyard maintenance and more.
School Programs: REAPS likes to create environmentally conscious minds at an early age, offering 33 school programs including Nature & Pond Study, Climate Change, Salmonids in the Classroom, Adopt-a-Worm, Dumpy the Overfed Landfill, and H2Ozone to name a few. This October the Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society will celebrate their 30th year of environmental education, enhancing and bringing awareness in our community. You can help support REAPS by participating in their fundraisers: Junk in the Trunk and the Annual Plant Sale. Not only do these fundraisers help create a greener space, but they also provide the funds necessary for REAPS to support their outreach. Sign up to become a member or make a charitable donation.
