Game Quest gets provincial business recognition

It was an eventful year for “Game Quest”, capped off with a big honour from the community.

After opening in late 2013, the store was in danger of closing up shop over a bylaw issue with the city, though store owner Kelsy Polnik says an outpouring of support from the community saw the store exempt from having to hold on to their stock for a month before putting it on the shelves.

“It’s been awesome, overwhelming, way more community support than we anticipated,” he says.

Now “Game Quest” is waiting to see if it won the BC Small Business Award for “People’s Choice” store of the year.

Polnik says just getting in the category’s top 10 it’s a huge honour.

“We got nominated really late too, so I didn’t expect anything to come of it,” he says.

Polnik explains how the nomination process works.

“Each business that gets nominated gets to lobby their customer base any way they see fit and then I think the votes are scaled depending on the size of the city as well,” he says. “That’s how Prince George can compete with cities like Vancouver and Victoria.”

Polnik will find out on January 30th if he won the “People’s Choice” award and score it’s $1500 prize.

He says that money would go a long way.

“We’re hoping to move right now, so that would definitely go into new fixtures we need around the place, like shelving, tables, chairs,” he says. “We have big plans for the move, that would definitely be helpful.”

Shiraz restaurant in PG also received some top 10 recognition, you can read about that in our previous story.
