Christmas is over ….
Your tree is dying ….
As you stare at needle after needle falling into your carpet, you’re probably thinking of an easy way to dispose of it.
Instead of tossing it into the dump or your neighbour’s lawn, President Tony Herba of the Prince George Central Lions’ Club says this weekend they are holding a recycling drive for Christmas trees at the CN Centre parking lot.
“The Christmas tree drop off will be all weekend,” he says. “Then the city will come along and shred the trees on Monday, January 5th.”
The Lions’ Club says chips from the trees become recycled back into community gardens.
Herba says donations raised stay in the city.
“We’ve got programs where we support eyeglasses for the elderly, or for kids, or just anybody who is low-income, we’ve got hearing aids, wheelchairs…,” he says.
Herba says they also help to send patients down to Vancouver any way they can, be it helping to pay for gas or food.
He says getting your Christmas tree chipped was once an honoured family tradition, but it`s seeing less and less action as families move toward artificial trees.
“In the past, we used to have trucks going around the city, picking up trees on the corners, but that was when there were quite a few Christmas trees” he remembers. “Now with so many artificial trees, we just have the real trees getting dropped off at CN Centre.”
The Lions’ Club Christmas Tree recycling drive starts at 10 a.m. Saturday.
