Update: Warning extended until Sunday, January 4th.
If you’re thinking of taking in the back country over the holiday, Avalanche Canada has a warning for you.
Guide Manager Karl Klassen says the fluctuating temperatures and heavy snowfall over the weekend is making of a shaky snow pack on the Northern Rockies, prompting an official warning.
“We are just a little worried that the conditions will cause people to be caught by surprise and they start triggering avalanches on the weekend,” he says.
Klassen stresses that he doesn’t want to tell you to avoid the mountains all together, just to be careful, aware and prepared for the worst;
“After ten of 15 minutes, your chance of survival buried is very low. So the party you are with, you and your friends will have to do the rescue. Generally speaking, by the time outside help arrives it is too late,” he points out.
A shovel, probe and transponder are mandatory for anyone playing in the mountains, while Klassen also mentions balloon packs are useful to help you stay on top of an avalanche.
Anyone without the proper training and gear should stick to areas with professional avalanche management. The warning is in place until December 30th.
