After nearly 30 years of helping people with disabilities in the job market, the Prince George Employment Services Society (Employment Action) is closing its doors.
The society helped those with disabilities enter and advance in the job market.
The announcement came at a news conference this morning (Tuesday), where the Employment Action presented four local organizations with the societies remaining funds.
Karen Heathman, President of Employment Action said they decided to close because other organizations were providing the same services.
“We realized we were not doing as much training for people with special needs as other organizations in the community,” Heathman told My PG Now.
Three cheques for $25,000 each were presented to the Northern BC Children and Family Hearing Society, The Community Arts Council of Prince George and District, and Special Olympics Prince George.
A fourth cheque for $92,300 was given to the Prince George Community Foundation.
Heathman said the community foundation was given the most significant amount because they only spend the interest earned on the money.
“I wish that the organizations we have given the assets too will go out and find innovative ways to help people with special needs in our community,” said Heathman.
