New fire hall plans unveiled with a $15 million price tag

Mayor Hall and members of the Prince George Fire Department unveiled the concept design for the new Fire Hall #1 at its location just off Massey Drive.

The new fire hall, which the city estimates will cost $15 million to build, will be approximately 50% larger than the current facility and have the capacity to house a functional and well-designed Emergency Operations Centre and Fire Operations Communications Centre.

A referendum in October of 2017 showed that nearly 83% of voters in the city were in favour of rebuilding the 60-year-old fire hall that exists downtown now.

According to a news release from the city, because of the central location of the new hall, the area that firefighters will be able to reach within an eight-minute response time will increase by 50%.

“Compared to the current fire hall which is cramped and inefficient, the new building will feature five, large truck bays and wood in key areas,” said Stuart Rothnie, an architect with HCMA Architects and Planning.

“Together with the Fire Department and staff from the City and Regional District, we’ve developed a facility that will be cost-effective but still prominent and a source of pride for the community.”

Construction will also result in a new access point for the YMCA of Northern BC, which will be off Massey across from Masich Place Stadium and via Del Laverdure Way.
