The ball is rolling on what could be the first place to legally buy cannabis in Prince George.
At their meeting last night, City Council gave first and second readings to a rezoning application from The Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB), who are applying for to open a BC Cannabis store at 6565 Southridge Avenue.
An approval would be a milestone event for the city, especially when it may also be just the second government-run store in the province, however, some questions were raised about the process itself.
Councillor Brian Skakun said to his understanding, there are about 135-140 private businesses across BC waiting to get the okay from the LCRB to do exactly what the province did tonight and get a permit to go before council.
“My concern is that the province has put themselves at the top of the heap while the private sector is waiting to get in on the market. At this point, I don’t think that’s fair.”
“They have to jump through so many hoops to get the permit, I think it’s a little frustrating for the private businesses.”
The next step in the process is a public hearing before a final vote, which General Manager of Planning, Ian Wells, said is expected to take place on February 4th.
